Overview
A prominent figure in the US queer community, Dorian Wood celebrates the legendary Mexican singer Chavela Vargas with Xavela Lux Aeterna, a flamboyant concert conceived as a ritual of love and memory.
Straddling visual arts, music, theatre and performance, Dorian Wood's creative work is driven by a desire to challenge the traditions and norms of the dominant systems of the modern world.
Xavela Lux Aeterna leads them to revisit the feverish repertoire of the great Chavela Vargas, who has become a queer icon today. Sharing Costa Rican roots, the two artists also share the same birthday (April 17).
Alongside a small musical ensemble, Dorian Wood reinvents the art of rancheras (traditional Mexican songs popularised from the 1930s onwards) with vocal mastery and magnetic presence.
Highly intense and contrasting, ranging from stripped-down intimacy to exuberance, the concert is an invitation to experience a luminous ritual of love and memory.
