Music on the threshold of day and night

The equinox marks that precious moment when day and night balance before tipping over. It is a moment of turning, a threshold where the light softens or intensifies. This programme, carried by the wind quintet, traverses a complete cycle, between clarity and darkness. In his Wind Quintet, Nielsen gives each instrument its due while building an ensemble of remarkable stability: it is day at its zenith. The light shifts with Barber's Summer Music. The composer captures the atmosphere of an afternoon in decline, the strange softness that precedes dusk. At the heart of the night, Sciarrino's sound world, built on the breath of the performers and the use of grating playing techniques, conjures a mysterious and unsettling nature. Medaglia's suite Belle-Epoque in Sud America brings the light back through its dancing energy and dazzling colours. As after the equinox, a new season opens, livelier and more contrasted.
