Guillaume Meurice

Guillaume Meurice Why are we up to our necks in shit? (and how not to hang our heads) The far right is at the gates of power, the Fifth Republic is on its deathbed, French democracy is wobbling, and Bernard Arnault has helped himself to truffles seconds in the canteen twice.

" How did we end up here? By selling off our democracy, which was after all our pride and joy? By letting darkness win over the land of the Enlightenment? By considering voting for Retailleau to block Bardella? By letting François Hollande think his opinion still carries weight?

In short, we are up to our necks in it. It is the conclusion that everyone worried about civil liberties is drawing at the moment, in more muted terms. Still, one has to ask why. In his new show, Guillaume Meurice traces the historical causes that led us to this fiasco.

Failed revolutions, electoral fiddles, constitutional sleights of hand, betrayals... and so on. The path is chaotic and not without absurdity. Along the way we meet Clovis, assorted emperors, Louise Michel, Charles de Gaulle, Aurore Bergé...

We also discover that power (SPOILER ALERT) is a violent poison. But. Because there is a "but". Guillaume Meurice also explores the means and tools at our disposal to turn the tide and fight our greatest enemy: resignation.

So, come on, children of the fatherland (and beyond), the day of glory may not be as far off as all that.
