Overview
KMFDM (originally Kein Mehrheit Für Die Mitleid, loosely translated as 'no pity for the majority') is a multinational industrial group from Hamburg, Germany. Founded by Sascha Konietzko in 1984, it began as a performance art project in Paris.
The group's early albums were recorded in Germany before it relocated to the United States, where it found far greater success with Chicago's flagship label Wax Trax!.
Throughout the 1990s, KMFDM constantly evolved through a revolving line-up, becoming an essential name on the American music scene.
Their 1995 hit 'Juke Joint Jezebel' propelled KMFDM onto the Billboard charts and led to appearances on numerous film soundtracks, including Bad Boys and Mortal Kombat. Bands such as Rammstein and Korn got their humble beginnings supporting KMFDM on tour.
KMFDM took a brief break in early 1999 following the recording of its 10th album for Wax Trax Records, which had run into difficulties with TVT Records. After releasing studio albums and touring frequently throughout the 2000s, Konietzko and Cifarelli returned to Germany in 2008.
Critics regard KMFDM as one of the first groups to popularise industrial music with a mainstream audience, although Konietzko describes their music as 'The Ultra-Heavy Beat'.
The group incorporates heavy metal guitar riffs, electronic music and both male and female vocals, spanning a variety of styles, including industrial rock, electronic body music and even reggae and dub.
The group is fiercely political, with many of its lyrics opposing violence, war and oppression.
