« Le ballet des ballets  »: this is how Rudolf Nureyev described it. Indeed, Tchaikovsky's The Sleeping Beauty, choreographed by Marius Petipa after the tale by Perrault and the Brothers Grimm, is among the most popular classical ballets. Combining the magic of its story with the virtuosity of its roles, it is performed today by most of the major classical companies. The Sleeping Beauty tells the story of Princess Aurora, endowed with every gift in the world thanks to the goodwill of her godmothers, the kind fairies, but whom the wicked fairy Carabosse condemns to an eternal sleep on the day of her sixteenth birthday. Tchaikovsky's score, with its fervour and flamboyance, offers a superb setting for the splendour of the choreography, the ensembles, the many variations, the character dances and the enchanting pas de deux, foremost among them the grand pas de deux of the finale. The Sleeping Beauty represents the pinnacle of classical ballet, in which dance asserts itself as a major art. This masterpiece is a treat for all admirers of dance, thanks to the performance of artists from the renowned Grand Ballet de Kiev. It is a show for the whole family, for children and adults alike, a symphony of dance, moving and marvellous. The Grand Ballet de Kiev is a successful classical dance ensemble from Ukraine. Its members come from the finest theatre, opera and ballet schools in Ukraine. Its director, who takes part in this very rigorous selection, is Alexander Stoyanov, a world-renowned ballet star. The company's repertoire consists above all of the great works of the classical dance heritage: Swan Lake, The Sleeping Beauty, The Nutcracker, Carmen, Giselle, Don Quixote and many more.
