The entire action of Le Misanthrope takes place in Célimène's apartments, more precisely in her drawing-room. A fashionable salon where, over the course of a single day, certain mechanisms and flaws of court life are brought to light. Love (as often with Molière), and friendship are, from one point of view, the pretexts for this story. From another perspective, one could also say that love is its main subject. Under the influence of Alceste's outbursts, heir to a bygone chivalrous ideal, and under the influence of the young Célimène, a coquette firmly rooted in a fashionable 17th century where lies, dissimulation, and hypocrisy are commonplace, conflicting relationships multiply. Conflict between Philinte and Alceste, two friends who, though in agreement on the substance, can never agree on the form. Conflict between Oronte and Alceste, between Arsinoé and Célimène, between the two marquises; finally, we witness a symbolic execution of Célimène, who ends up attracting the wrath of ambient hypocrisies and other vacuities. The hypocrite, the liar, the lover, and the ridiculous, whom Molière tirelessly exposed and mocked throughout his life, are the characters that lead to these conflicts. Whether religious, artistic, generational, romantic, legal, or friendly, these conflicts, as described by Molière in Le Misanthrope, echo the way we experience our own! Molière reveals everyone's flaws, offering spectators of yesterday and today the spectacle of their human nature…
