The entire action of The Misanthrope takes place in Célimène's apartments, more precisely in her drawing room. A fashionable salon where, over the course of a single day, certain mechanisms and foibles of court life are brought to light. Love (as so often in Molière), and friendship, are, from one point of view, the pretexts for this story. From another, one could also say that love is its principal subject. Under the sway of Alceste's outbursts, heir to a chivalric ideal long since faded, and under the influence of the young Célimène, a coquette firmly rooted in a fashionable seventeenth century where lies, dissimulation and hypocrisy are commonplace, conflicts multiply. There is conflict between Philinte and Alceste, two friends who, though in agreement at heart, can never agree on form. Conflict between Oronte and Alceste, between Arsinoé and Célimène, between the two marquis; and finally we witness the symbolic undoing of Célimène, who ends up provoking the wrath of the hypocrisies and other vacuities surrounding her. The hypocrite, the liar, the lover and the ridiculous, which Molière never tired of showing and mocking throughout his life, are the characters who lead to these conflicts. Whether religious, artistic, generational, amorous, legal or amicable, these conflicts, as Molière depicts them in The Misanthrope, echo the way we live our own! Molière reveals the foibles of each of us, offering the spectators of yesterday and today the spectacle of their shared human nature…
