Le Misanthrope d'après Molière

Following Le Portrait de Dorian Gray, L'Idiot and also Le Jour où je suis devenue chanteuse black, the Compagnie Thomas Le Douarec presents a Misanthrope 2.0 which has been enjoying considerable success for three years at the Festival d'Avignon and on tour. For his first staging of a text by Molière, director and actor Thomas Le Douarec offers a modern version, transposing the action of the play into the artificial, superficial world of influencers, Instagrammers, YouTubers and other jet-setters... Without resorting to mere provocation, he instead highlights the full modernity of Molière's language and message, and reminds us of the rebellious, visionary man he was. Alceste loathes social life, refuses any compromise and denounces the hypocrisy of his peers. Yet he is madly in love with the frivolous Célimène, a young, beautiful widow, coquettish and accommodating... In this comedy with its dark tone, Molière questions whether it is possible to be happy, sincere and free in a society obsessed with and eaten away by appearances and pretence. A biting play, somewhere between laughter and emotion.
