Les Quatre Saisons de Buenos Aires

During the 20th century, the Americas witnessed the birth of an exceptionally rich musical heritage, nurtured by the dialogue between Amerindian traditions, African legacies, and European cultures stemming from various migrations. This cross-cultural blend gave rise to music that is at once colourful, expressive, and deeply rhythmic, where scholarly composition naturally intertwines with popular influences. This programme offers a glimpse into this through three emblematic composers: the American Samuel Barber and the Argentinians Carlos Guastavino and Astor Piazzolla. The sonatas by Barber and Guastavino are part of the great European tradition, while allowing a sensibility deeply rooted in popular culture to surface. With Astor Piazzolla's famous Saisons de Buenos Aires, a vibrant nod to Vivaldi, the soul of tango, a quintessential mixed-culture music, enters the world of chamber music. Performed by the musicians of Ensemble ALMAVIVA, a group specialising in the classical repertoire of the Americas, this concert offers a musical journey from North America to the barrios (neighbourhoods) of Buenos Aires.
