Ma_Jara

Ma_Jara Le Quatuor Béla, the Palestinian masters of the Duo Sabîl and two Syrian musicians create a daring music. The nay and the kanun join the violins, viola, cello, oud and percussion to explore a shared sonic territory, united by a single breath.

For 20 years, the Quatuor Béla has held a distinctive place in the landscape of string quartets, taking on every repertoire.

In 2012, the encounter between this outstanding French ensemble and the Duo Sabîl – also known as Ahmad Al Khatib, an oud virtuoso, and Youssef Hbeisch, a talented percussionist – launched the musical and friendly adventure of Jadayel, revived at the T/SQY in 2024.

Building on this, Ma_Jara widens the circle to include Laila Mahmoud on the kanun (table zither) and Moslem Rahal on the nay (oriental flute). On stage, this gives 4 + 2 + 2 = 1!

In short, a major new musical work for a chamber orchestra of blended timbres, between modal writing and polyphony.

Nourished by the learned traditions of Europe and the Middle East as much as by listening to bodies and breath, their joyful music is a soundscape of immense fertility. Duration: 1h10
