Overview
The legendary Salif Keita, the golden voice of Mali, returns to enchant the Parisian stage. An unmissable event at L'Olympia to discover or rediscover one of the greatest ambassadors of African music.
Salif Keita, born in 1949 in Djoliba, Mali, is an emblematic figure in African and world music. A direct descendant of Soundiata Keita, founder of the Mali Empire, he had to overcome prejudices related to his albinism and his status as a nobleman wishing to become a musician, a profession traditionally reserved for griots. His career truly began with the Rail Band de Bamako in 1970, before he joined Les Ambassadeurs Internationaux, with whom he recorded flagship tracks such as « Mandjou ». These early years forged his musical identity, blending Mandingo traditions with contemporary sounds.
His international career took a decisive turn with his move to France in the 1980s and the release of his first solo album, « Soro », in 1987. Produced by Ibrahima Sylla, this opus marked a milestone, fusing traditional instruments (kora, balafon) and synthesizers, paving the way for global recognition. Albums like « Ko-Yan » (1989) and « Amen » (1991), the latter nominated for a Grammy Award, consolidated his reputation. Salif Keita is known for his powerful and melancholic voice, capable of conveying a rare emotional depth, often serving messages of peace, tolerance, and social justice.
Salif Keita's style is a unique fusion of traditional Mandingo music, Afro-Cuban rhythms, and pop and jazz influences. He has managed to modernise Malian music while preserving its essence, creating a distinctive sound that has inspired numerous artists worldwide. His lyrics, often in Bambara or Malinké, address universal themes, making him a true musical poet. His commitment to the cause of people with albinism, notably through the Salif Keita Foundation, adds a humanitarian dimension to his artistic work.
A Salif Keita concert is always a memorable experience. His charismatic stage presence, accompanied by talented musicians, promises a captivating sonic journey. L'Olympia, a legendary venue in the capital, offers an ideal setting to appreciate the richness of his repertoire and the power of his voice.
