Overview
On 7 January 1977, Toto's founding line-up gathered for the first time at Davlen Studios in North Hollywood, California, to begin recording the demos that would become the band's debut album.
Co-founders David Paich and Jeff Porcaro, alongside Steve Lukather, Bobby Kimball, Steve Porcaro and David Hungate, launched a career that, nearly half a century later, remains celebrated, cherished and relevant.
Each year, the audience grows younger, with new generations continuing to discover this timeless repertoire. The band's self-titled debut album was released on Columbia Records in October 1978.
'Hydra' followed in 1979, then 'Turn Back' in 1981, before the massive 'Toto IV', released in 1982. That album won six Grammy Awards, including Record of the Year for 'Rosanna', Album of the Year and Producer of the Year.
'Isolation' (1984), 'Fahrenheit' (1986), 'The Seventh One' (1988), 'Kingdom of Desire' (1992), 'Tambu' (1995) and 'Mindfields' (1999) followed.
The band continued to release new material periodically, including 'Through The Looking Glass' (2002), 'Falling In Between' (2006), 'Toto XIV' (2015) and 'Old Is New' (2018). The soundtrack to David Lynch's film Dune, composed by the band, was also released in 1984.
Over five decades, Toto's global audience has continued to grow. The shift of listeners to streaming has only increased the band's popularity, and its cumulative number of streams now exceeds nine billion across all digital platforms.
Toto's biggest hit, 'Africa', alone has surpassed the TWO BILLION streams mark on Spotify, while 'Hold The Line' now exceeds the ONE BILLION mark. This considerable volume is not limited to the three most popular songs, but extends across the band's entire catalogue.
