About — The artist
Alain Chabat is a French actor, director, screenwriter, producer, comedian and television presenter, born on 24 November 1958 in Oran (then in French Algeria).
Discovered on Canal+ as a member of the comedy group Les Nuls, he went on to become one of the leading figures of comedy in French cinema.
As an actor, he established himself with several hits, mainly in the comic register. Besides his own films, he notably appeared in La Cité de la peur (1994), Gazon maudit (1995), Le Goût des autres (2001), Chouchou (2003), Ils se marièrent et eurent beaucoup d'enfants (2004), Prête-moi ta main (2006), La Personne aux deux personnes (2008), Les Gamins (2013) and Incroyable mais vrai (2022).
Although he specialises in comedy, he has also appeared in dramatic films such as Le Cousin (1997) and L'Amour ouf (2024). He has also worked twice under the direction of Michel Gondry: La Science des rêves (2006) and L'Écume des jours (2013). He also has small roles in two major productions: Night at the Museum 2 (2009) and Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (2017). More rarely seen in television fiction, he has appeared for example in the series Kaamelott (2007) and En place (2024).
Nominated three times for the César Award for Best Actor and twice for Best Supporting Actor, he won the latter in 2025 for L'Amour ouf.
He has also established himself as a leading comedy screenwriter and director: first with Didier (1997), winner of the César Award for Best First Film in 1998, then the huge commercial success Astérix et Obélix: Mission Cléopâtre (2002), one of the best-performing films in French box-office history. Following the failure of RRRrrrr!!! (2004), he became less prolific. He subsequently directed two films aimed more at a younger audience: Sur la piste du Marsupilami (2012) and Santa et Cie (2017). He later returned to the world of comic books by directing the 3D animated mini-series Astérix et Obélix: Le Combat des chefs (2025) for Netflix.
For television, he developed the animated series Avez-vous déjà vu..? (2006) — for which he also provided the voices — and, most notably, created, produced and hosted the game show Burger Quiz, which, after a first season broadcast on Canal+ in 2001, returned on TMC between 2018 and 2020. He also hosted a late-night show on TF1 in 2022, Le Late avec Alain Chabat.
