About — The artist

Andreas Scholl, born November 10, 1967, is a German countertenor, a classical singer working in the alto register, specializing in baroque music.

Coming from a family of singers, Scholl joined the Kiedrich boys' choir at the age of seven. At 13, he was chosen from among 20,000 choristers from around the world in Rome to sing as a soloist at a mass on January 4, 1981. Four years later, he joined the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis, an institution in principle reserved for postgraduate students, on account of the quality of his voice. He went on to become a teacher there, succeeding his own teacher, Richard Levitt, and has taught since October 2019 at the Universität Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria, his only current teaching position.

His operatic debuts include stepping in for René Jacobs in 1993 at the Théâtre Grévin in Paris, where he caused a sensation, as well as his Glyndebourne debut in 1998 in the role of Bertarido in Handel's Rodelinda, a role he reprised at the Metropolitan Opera in 2006.

Most of his recording career has taken place with Harmonia Mundi and Decca, his records ranking among the label's best sellers. He has worked with most of the leading contemporary baroque specialists, including William Christie and Philippe Herreweghe, and composes his own ballet and theatre music in his own recording studio.
