About — The artist
An orchestra is a musical ensemble made up of instrumentalists brought together to perform a musical work. The number and combination of performers depend on the composer, the period and the genre of the repertoire being performed. Most often, it is conducted by a conductor.
Depending on the families of instruments that make it up (strings, woodwinds, brass and percussion), the orchestra can take many forms, such as:
in classical music:
the symphony orchestra (or "philharmonic"), where all four families are combined;
the wind band, which is limited to woodwinds, brass and percussion;
the string orchestra, which, as its name suggests, is limited to strings;
and in other musical genres:
the jazz orchestra;
the fanfare (brass, saxophones and percussion);
the bagad (woodwinds and percussion).
