About — The venue

The Musée de l'Homme is a French national museum, part of the Muséum national d'histoire naturelle (MNHN), housed since 1937 on the upper floors of the Palais de Chaillot in Paris. Its purpose is to present humankind in its anthropological, historical and cultural diversity. It operates under the joint oversight of the Ministry of Higher Education and Research and the Ministry of Ecology.

Heir to a prestigious history and popular with the public, the Musée de l'Homme originally presented humankind through its evolutionary, anthropological and ethnographic aspects (and consequently its cultural, ethnobotanical and ethnozoological dimensions).

In 2009, President Jacques Chirac emptied the ethnographic collections of the Musée de l'Homme in order to create his Musée du Quai Branly - Jacques-Chirac. Another part of the collections went to the Musée des Civilisations de l'Europe et de la Méditerranée (MUCEM) in Marseille. The renovation works involved an investment of €96.6 million from the Ministry of Higher Education and Research (95%) and the Ministry of Culture (5%), and the museum reopened to the public in 2015.
