In a few words

Agrippina marks one of the high points of Handel's Italian output, when he was just twenty-five years old. Shortly after, he would triumph in London with Rinaldo, which would encourage him to settle there for many years and compose his greatest works. But even in this Agrippina, the incredible variety of arias and the particular inflections he gives to each character are striking. Handel also gives pride of place to humour, where the main male figures, Ottone, Nerone and Claudio, are ultimately just puppets in the formidable hands of Agrippina and Poppea. It's vaudeville ahead of its time and three hours of pure delight, both orchestral and vocal.
