In a few words

Lithuanian soprano Asmik Grigorian performs on the stages of the world's greatest institutions, such as the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Opéra de Paris (Puccini's Il Trittico) and the Royal Opera House in London. She is therefore accustomed to performing on large opera stages, but tonight she appears in the intimate setting of a recital, accompanied by Lukas Geniušas on piano, for a masterclass on Rachmaninov's mélodies. A contemporary of Ravel, Bartók and Schoenberg, Rachmaninov remains a melodist of inexhaustible and moving invention. His mélodies span from 1890 to 1916, the period when he left his homeland. Demanding in terms of literary quality, they prominently feature Pushkin and Lermontov, as well as some of his contemporaries. While one can detect certain musical echoes of Tchaikovsky or Rimsky-Korsakov, he adorns them with a whole range of very personal nuances that make them a corpus of great coherence and delicacy.
