Overview
How many music lovers would have dreamed of attending the magisterial concert in Vienna on 22 December 1808! Beethoven conducted several unpublished masterpieces there and made his last appearance as a soloist.
The Orchestre de chambre de Paris marks this bicentenary of the composer's death with the radiant Symphony No. 6 in F major, "Pastoral". Long familiar with this repertoire, the orchestra adds two rarer works to the programme. For the 1808 evening, Beethoven had reworked his concert aria "Ah! perfido", here lifted by the rich tone of mezzo-soprano Eva Zaïcik. Méhul helped usher in Romanticism in France, contributing to the expansion of the sonic palette of the symphony, as did his contemporary Beethoven.
The programme:
MÉHUL
Symphony No. 1 in G minor
BEETHOVEN
"Ah! perfido, spergiuro, barbaro traditor", concert aria, Op. 65
Symphony No. 6 in F major, "Pastoral", Op. 68
The artists:
Thomas Hengelbrock, conductor
Eva Zaïcik, mezzo-soprano
