Overview
'Beethoven was haunted by the idea of the hero, man or woman, standing alone in resistance to tyranny. Such is Antigone, who chooses to die rather than break laws to which even the gods are subject. ' Life will go on.
The intrinsically dramatic form of a symphony allows this journey to be expressed, leading from darkness towards a kind of light. The human voice, which rises from the orchestra while remaining foreign to it, is here a disembodied instrument, dancing, unconstrained.
Written for the bicentenary of Beethoven's death, Wills's Antigone enters naturally into dialogue with the Symphony No. 4.
Composed four years after the sombre Heiligenstadt Testament, in which Beethoven spoke of his onset of deafness and of his wish to end his life, it revives an atmosphere full of charm and vitality. The programme: SIMON WILLSAntigone, symphony for orchestra and voice.
