The sound waves of Radiant Circles, the youthful effervescence and powerful lyricism of Rachmaninov, and one of the most cherished symphonies of the Romantic repertoire: a programme of a thousand reflections. Radiant Circles, by the composer Augusta Read Thomas, opens in a suspended, crystalline atmosphere, the music turning into whirling spirals before culminating in an energetic fanfare. Written by a musician barely 18 years old, still a student at the Conservatoire, Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No. 1 – his Opus 1 – remains one of his most engaging scores. It culminates in the monumental solo cadenza of its first movement. The premiere of Brahms's Symphony No. 3 in 1883 was the occasion of one of the composer's greatest triumphs: "the tributes paid to the composer reached a degree of enthusiasm almost never equalled before in Vienna", wrote his biographer Max Kalbeck. Clara Schumann was its ardent admirer: "What a work, what poetry!"
