Memories of a Jamaican rural community gathered around its sound system.
Between 1991 and 2025, I photographed the daily life of Deleon Bigwoods, a small village in the Westmoreland hills, Jamaica. Every evening, a bar-grocery store became the beating heart of the community around its sound system: the “Prosperous”.
These photographs tell the story of Reggae Dancehall as much as the memory of a rural world now undergoing profound transformation. I had never considered exhibiting them. The passage of Hurricane Melissa in October 2025 shattered this certainty.
Several of the photographed locations were destroyed. The exhibition brings together portraits and scenes of daily life, punctuated in the evening by a massive, handcrafted sound system.
Those who wish to extend this encounter can participate in local actions via the Jah Works Experience organisation, which has been involved in rural co-development in Jamaica for many years. Stéphane Delphin
