Didon et Énée Henry Purcell One of the major works of the English Baroque.
Cast Adèle Charvet | Dido Henry Neill | Aeneas Ana Quintans | Belinda Igor Bouin | The Sorceress / A Sailor Caroline Meng | The First Witch Anouk Defontenay | The Second Witch Fernando Escalona Melendez | A Spirit Marie Théoleyre | A Lady-in-waiting Le Poème Harmonique Vincent Dumestre | conductor In brief Dido is a chamber opera in which tragedy and comedy intermingle, carried by a narrative of infinite delicacy.
Purcell incorporated the dances of French opera and placed emphasis on arias in the Italian manner. Its brevity of one hour does nothing to diminish the dramatic tension, which culminates in Dido's final lament. Production Théâtre des Champs-Élysées
