This theme of clemency is a classic in opera, especially when the works stem from a royal commission. That is precisely the case of this work, composed in just eighteen days by Mozart for Prague in 1791 for the coronation of Leopold II, alongside The Magic Flute and the Requiem.
Despite a libretto by the poet Metastasio, used many times by other composers, and a musical form, opera seria, already outdated, Mozart's subtle and delicate music brings the truth of the emotions to light.
In Willy Decker's stylised production, a block of marble at the centre of the stage gradually reveals the hidden side of the Emperor: that of a lonely and wounded man.
