Eden

1974, the month of tornadoes. Two teenagers, Sonora, an African-American girl, and her best friend Clayton, a white boy, both from the working class, break into houses in affluent neighbourhoods. Domino, another teenager, joins them.

The trio invents lives they don't have and projects themselves into the American dream. One day, they enter the house of Rufus, an African-American from a wealthier family.

This place gradually becomes their refuge and their Eden: they meet there, have fun, and explore their sexuality. But this youthful intoxication is brutally interrupted when Sonora reveals the truth about her missing brother Hiram.

A rift then opens in the young people's lives, putting an end to their dreams. After La Brèche and Qui a besoin du ciel, Eden is the third part of the trilogy by American author Naomi Wallace, which depicts the ravages of neoliberalism in late 20th-century Kentucky.

Tommy Milliot, the director, comes from the North of France, a working-class region that fell into disgrace after the collapse of the textile and fossil fuel industries. This provides a basis for connection.

In Eden, he entrusts five young performers with the task of bringing this writing, as poetic as it is political, to life. The stage is inhabited by their adolescent, fluid, floating, almost dreamlike presence.

This coming-of-age story strikes with its veracity and challenges the myth of the American dream.
