CLAUDIO MONTEVERDI: Il Vespro della Beata Vergine.
In composing Il Vespro della Beata Vergine, Monteverdi set out to show his absolute mastery of both the stile antico (the great polyphony inherited from the Renaissance) and the stile moderno (he had just created L'Orfeo in 1607, the founding act of modern opera).
Highly symbolically, the work opens with the flamboyant instrumental toccata from L'Orfeo, joined by the text "Deus in adjutorium meum intende". What follows is a breathtaking union of counterpoint and solo singing, enhanced by a shimmering instrumental array.
Ensemble InAlto, directed by Lambert Colson, sets out to renew our view of an incomparable masterpiece in the history of Western music. In this thrilling undertaking, it can draw on a group of singers and instrumentalists who count among the foremost experts in this repertoire.
