The composer was 20 when he discovered Goethe's work, and, like all the young Romantics of the period, he was fascinated by the story. Gounod here moves away from the conventions of French grand opera.

The drama becomes more intimate, the vocal virtuosity more supple and sustained by an expressive orchestration. Debussy regarded Gounod's art as 'representing a moment of French sensibility.

It is beauty in potential, bursting forth exactly when it is needed, with a fatal and secret force'. Co-production Jeanine Roze Production | Les Grandes Voix
