Entirely written on sacred texts, as would also be the case for his Messiah two years later, it was nevertheless intended to be performed in theatres. The work illustrates in turn the ten plagues of Egypt and Israel's return to the promised land.
Unlike a Bach Passion or a Mozart opera, Haendel very rarely uses recitative here, giving the choirs the essential part of the narrative discourse. Production Théâtre des Champs-Élysées
