“Manon is a beautiful sixteen-year-old girl who loves life and cannot resist passing pleasures. She is charming, but amoral.”: this is how choreographer Kenneth MacMillan described the heroine of his ballet L’Histoire de Manon, inspired by Abbé Prévost’s famous novel. Created in 1974 at the Royal Opera House, this vast tragic fresco, which entered the repertoire of the Opéra de Paris in 1990, illustrates the psychological subtlety, mastery of narrative ballets, and sense of theatre characteristic of the British choreographer. Nicholas Georgiadis’s sumptuous sets and costumes, as well as the purity of the movements, reflect the juxtaposition between Manon’s modest origins and the brilliant world to which she aspires. Carried by musical excerpts from Jules Massenet, the passion between Manon and Des Grieux is deeply moving in its intensity, from the small inn near Paris to the swamps of Louisiana. Featuring the Étoiles, Premières Danseuses, Premiers Danseurs, and the Corps de Ballet of the Opéra with the Orchestre de l’Opéra national de Paris
