About — The theatre

The Opéra Garnier, or Palais Garnier, is a national theatre dedicated to being an academy of music, choreography, and lyrical poetry; it is a major element of the heritage of the 9th arrondissement of Paris and of the capital. It is located on Place de l'Opéra, at the northern end of Avenue de l'Opéra and at the crossroads of numerous streets.

The building stands out as a monument particularly representative of the eclectic architecture and historicist style of the second half of the 19th century. Based on a design by architect Charles Garnier, chosen after a competition, its construction, decided by Napoleon III as part of the transformations of Paris led by Prefect Haussmann and interrupted by the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, was resumed at the beginning of the Third Republic, after the destruction by fire of the Opéra Le Peletier in 1873. The building was inaugurated on 5 January 1875 by President Mac Mahon under the Third Republic.

This opera house was called “Opéra de Paris” until 1989, when the opening of the Opéra Bastille, also an Opéra de Paris, influenced its name. It is now referred to solely by the name of its architect: “Opéra Garnier” or “Palais Garnier”. The two opera houses are now grouped within the public industrial and commercial establishment “Opéra national de Paris”, a French public institution whose mission is to present lyrical or ballet performances of high artistic quality.

The Opéra Garnier has been classified as a historical monument since 16 October 1923. It is accessible by metro (Opéra station), by RER (line A, Auber station) and by the RATP bus network.
