It was there that he composed L’Histoire du soldat, to a text by the poet Charles-Ferdinand Ramuz. This chamber ballet-opera, whose atmosphere draws on the travelling circus and on jazz, is the polar opposite of the grand, sumptuous ballets of the Diaghilev era.
Worn out by the years of war, the times are lean and one must make do with little: three actors climb onto the boards of a travelling show, here all three played by the actor Lambert Wilson, and a handful of musicians join them to strike up in turn a military march, a Spanish paso doble, a Viennese waltz, an Argentine tango and an American ragtime… Production Théâtre des Champs-Élysées
