Overview
From 1941 onwards, women enlisted in the Soviet army to fight the Hitlerite troops: mine clearers, fighter pilots, sharpshooters. Few people knew their stories. Standing against oblivion, the Belarusian writer Svetlana Alexievich, Nobel Prize laureate in Literature, gathered their testimonies. These accounts intertwine their convictions, their struggles, the sexual violence and the ordinary anecdotes of wartime.
By bringing these voices to the stage, Julie Deliquet offers a deeply moving creation, somewhere between documentary theatre and polyphonic narrative. In an apartment, between the kitchen and the laundry drying, nine actresses bring these former combatants, long kept out of sight, vividly to life as they face a young journalist. Their words finally reach us, echoing today's conflicts, in which women continue to pay a heavy price... often in the deepest silence.
