Figaro qua, Figaro là! He is everywhere, the barber of Seville, always ready to lend a hand, whether it is for a quick comb or for playing matchmaker. Especially when it comes to furthering the love affair between Count Almaviva and the young Rosina, who is jealously guarded by her guardian. Like his hero Figaro, taken from Beaumarchais's comedy, Gioacchino Rossini drove his score at a breakneck pace. Premiered at the Teatro Argentina in Rome in 1816 in just fourteen days, his Barber of Seville is a peak of opera buffa. Vocal virtuosity, youthful exuberance, brilliant orchestration: all the ingredients that explain the success of this piquant music.
