In a nutshell
A grandiose work, Messiah is without doubt the most frequently performed oratorio in the entire history of sacred music. The libretto contrasts strongly with the other works of this genre by the composer. Rather than set out a majestic dramatic narrative, the text of Messiah focuses above all on the themes of prophecy and meditation. Beyond its celebrated "Hallelujah", the score displays, throughout its three parts, all the splendour of Handel's orchestral and choral writing.
