Written a few months apart, Schumann's Piano Concerto and Symphony No. 2 paint a vibrant portrait of a composer strengthened by love. Conductor Riccardo Minasi and pianist Vadym Kholodenko bring their synergy to this programme dedicated to the most romantic of romantics. The Piano Concerto can be heard as yet another declaration to Clara, his wife since 1840. The figure of the beloved shines especially in the first movement, where she meets Eusebius, Schumann's musical, poetic, and reserved alter ego. Similarly, encrypted messages permeate Symphony No. 2, written between two depressive periods. From darkness to joy, the work absorbs autobiographical elements and testifies to the composer's rebirth.
