The entire work is driven by this portrayal of love and social conventions. There is thus much of the man Mozart in Les Noces. One can read between the lines his personal experience – his disputes with an autocratic employer, Archbishop Colloredo in Salzburg – and his audacity to scratch at the aristocracy and highlight the intelligence of ordinary people. And always, and perhaps even more so here, this virtuosity of Mozartean singing, whether in recitatives, arias, or ensembles. Mozart, unique as he is universal, for a masterful lesson in recitare, the art of "playing theatre".
