The Marriage, or five characters torn between desire and duty. The entire work is carried by this depiction of love and social convention. There is thus a great deal of the man Mozart in Figaro.

We can read between the lines his own personal experience — his troubles with an autocratic employer, Archbishop Colloredo in Salzburg — and his boldness in needling the aristocracy while highlighting the intelligence of ordinary people.

And, always, and perhaps here even more than elsewhere, this virtuosity of Mozartian singing, whether in recitatives, arias or ensembles. Mozart, as singular as he is universal, for a masterful lesson in recitare, the art of "playing theatre". Production Les Grandes Voix
