A musician of prolific fertility, he authored seventy-one operas. Maria Stuarda is the second opus of his "English queens" trilogy, inaugurated with Anna Bolena and concluded by Roberto Devereux.
The action takes place on an island in northern Europe where two queens, the Catholic Mary and the Anglican Elizabeth, wage a merciless war for power but also for the conquest of the same man.
