In a few words
Donizetti, succeeding Rossini and preceding Verdi, played a decisive role in the evolution of Italian opera in the 19th century. A prolific composer, he is the author of seventy-one operas. Maria Stuarda is the second work in his trilogy of the "English queens", inaugurated with Anna Bolena and concluded with Roberto Devereux. The action takes place on an island in northern Europe, where two queens, the Catholic Mary and the Anglican Elizabeth, wage a merciless war for power but also for the conquest of the same man. In the end, only one will emerge victorious from this lyrical drama, as expansive as it is melancholic.
