Medea's possessive love and her destiny reveal that love is not so much the affair of the gods as that of men, since the being who represents Love – here Medea – will go so far as to grant herself the right to annihilate her own children.
For the librettist Thomas Corneille, as it already was for his elder brother Pierre, the matter is settled: only love makes us human beings live, and it is for this reason that it must have all rights; but if this is the case, what makes men live is also what kills them, for he who has all rights no longer recognises any duty...
