"For years, Beethoven's Concerto has been my favourite to play and listen to; it's a piece that has helped me mature over time. After arriving in France at the age of fourteen, I started playing it. Certain passages resonated very strongly with me, bringing back the nostalgia of my childhood in Serbia and the joy of my new life in France."
Many consider it "The concerto of concertos", and indeed with this Opus 61, Beethoven turned a page in the history of the genre. Moving away from the demonstrative virtuosity of some of his predecessors, he inaugurated a purely musical style, giving unprecedented importance to the orchestra; the tutti preceding the soloist's entrance probably remains the longest in the repertoire. And what can be said about the five opening timpani strokes, as strange as they are brilliant!
