What is the connection between Schumann's Fantasy and Beethoven? The former, in which you may hear an echo of An die ferne Geliebte, was composed to fund a memorial to the latter, a project championed by Liszt, to whom the work is dedicated, and who would make up the missing sum from his own personal purse. Before tackling it, Nikolaï Lugansky will pair two rarely coupled sonatas by the great Ludwig: the Sixteenth, full of humour though written at the same time as the "Heiligenstadt Testament", and the Thirtieth, whose finale, on which everything rests, varies a kind of sarabande to be played "with the most inward feeling". A piece which the Russian pianist, in the midst of his complete Beethoven cycle for Harmonia Mundi, will explore in all its depth.
