In brief
Divided into cantatas, the Christmas Oratorio, beginning with the birth of Jesus and concluding with the adoration of the Magi, was originally intended to be performed over six consecutive days. The work draws extensively on the Gospels of Saint Luke and Saint Matthew and offers one of the most masterful pages of Bach's art.
