In a few words
The musical setting of the final days of Christ dates back to the early days of Christianity. The genre changed little until the 14th century, before gaining its letters of nobility two centuries later with the Lutheran Reformation, which imposed the text sung in German so that it could be understood by all and, under the influence of Italian opera, developed a richer polyphonic form.
The St John Passion was the first large-scale work written for Leipzig, the city where Bach had settled.
This grand piece strikes the listener with the beauty of its solo arias as much as with its choral sections.
