In brief

In the years separating the St John from the St Matthew, Bach never ceased to enrich his musical experience and to bring a number of innovations to his writing. He magnifies the sonic scope with a third choir and strengthens the variety of the recitative. This masterpiece closes the long list of passions in the history of music. Those that follow will no longer be, with rare exceptions, passions in the liturgical sense, and they will pave the way for the oratorio form.
