Platée is a singular opera, whose surprising character, both musically and dramatically, has lost none of its splendour since its creation over 275 years ago for the wedding of the Dauphin and the Infanta of Spain. The subversions of the genre make irony the work's master weapon. Under his pen, Olympus is ridiculed, mythological grandeur becomes a farce, and the intrigues a simple contest of vanities. By opting for the traditional structure of a prologue and three acts, close to the grand lyrical tragedy, the eminently noble and serious genre created by Lully, Rameau here invents the genre of lyrical comedy.
