Perhaps no musical work has ever left behind such profound disquiet, amplified by more than two centuries of legends. The composition of the Requiem is not without its romantic mysteries. It is known that it was commissioned by Count Walsegg, who desired a mass for the dead for his deceased wife. It is also known that the musician's death interrupted its composition, probably begun in early 1791, and that it was completed by his pupils Eybler and then Sussmayer. However, religious repertoire had always been a genre in its own right for Mozart, cultivated regularly throughout his life. From his very first masses, he demonstrated a mastery of instrumental and vocal polyphony, of which the choirs of the Mass in C minor are a brilliant example.
