Between orientalist enchantment, romantic seduction and biting modernity, conductor Alevtina Ioffe explores with the Orchestre national d'Île-de-France every facet of the Russian repertoire from the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, whose orchestral splendours readily harbour a satirical dimension. The overture to Rimsky-Korsakov's opera The Golden Cockerel, based on Pushkin's tale, is an orchestral firework display. The orchestra sparkles with a thousand lights and brilliant irony. The mood changes with Prokofiev's Second Piano Concerto: its virtuosity, all flashes of brilliance, displays abrupt contrasts between dark lyricism and the percussive power of the piano. The charismatic playing of Arsenii Mun will flourish in this score, as spectacular as it is intense.
