Line-up: Simon Spang Hanssen, sax/composition; Mario Canonge, piano; Linley Marthe, bass; Adriano DD Tenorio, percussion.
With Ear Witness, Simon Spang-Hanssen leads a contemporary jazz quartet where composition and improvisation continually confront one another, in an open aesthetic inherited from his collaborations with figures such as John Tchicai and Michel Portal, balancing formal rigour with freedom of play.
On piano, Mario Canonge, a career spanning Martinique and Paris, Ultramarine with Nguyên Lê, percussive playing and mixed harmonies steeped in jazz and Caribbean influences, an essential presence on the French scene.
On bass, Linley Marthe, a former member of the Joe Zawinul Syndicate, known for his power and virtuosity, a dense, precise sound instantly recognisable in contemporary jazz fusion.
On drums, Adriano Tenorio, Brazilian heritage and European circulation, collaborations with Mayra Andrade and Gregory Privat, supple, structuring playing deeply rooted in rhythm and movement.
Together, a taut, organic collective language, where every voice keeps its identity while building a coherent whole, with, running through it, excerpts from Simon Spang-Hanssen's upcoming album Seconds Ago (out 28 August 2026) and a tribute to Félix Sabal-Lecco.
