Overview
When the sacred becomes opera. Two Italian masters, two sacred works in which faith is expressed with the power of lyric theatre.
Rossini's Stabat Mater is a flamboyant prayer, intensely operatic, which turns spiritual grief into a true drama of voices, carried by soprano Joyce El-Khoury.
In mirror image, Verdi's Messa solenne: an exceptionally rare early work of which only the Kyrie and the Gloria survive, already hinting at the dramatic drive of the composer of Nabucco and Otello.
At their head, Speranza Scappucci, an Italian conductor with a strong lyrical flair, conducts Insula orchestra and accentus – a period-instrument orchestra and an outstanding choir – for an evening of rare intensity.
