Overview
When the sacred becomes opera. Two Italian masters, two sacred works where faith is expressed with the power of lyric theatre. Rossini's Stabat Mater is a flamboyant prayer, intensely operatic, which makes spiritual pain a true drama of voices, carried by soprano Joyce El-Khoury.
In mirror, Verdi's Messa solenne: a very rare work of youth of which only the Kyrie and Gloria remain, already hinting at the dramatic momentum of the composer of Nabucco and Otello.
At their helm, Speranza Scappucci, Italian conductor with affirmed lyricism, directs Insula orchestra and accentus – orchestra on period instruments and excellent choir – for an evening of rare intensity.
