Overview
When the sacred becomes opera. Two Italian masters, two sacred works where faith is expressed with the power of lyrical theatre. Rossini's Stabat Mater is a flamboyant, intensely operatic prayer, transforming spiritual pain into a true vocal drama, led by soprano Joyce El-Khoury.
Mirroring this is Verdi's Messa solenne: a very rare early work of which only the Kyrie and Gloria survive, already hinting at the dramatic impetus of the composer of Nabucco and Otello.
Leading them is Speranza Scappucci, an Italian conductor with an assertive lyricism, directing Insula orchestra and accentus – an orchestra on period instruments and an excellent choir – for an evening of rare intensity.
