2027 marks the 200th anniversary of Beethoven's death. To kick off this year of celebration, it is the great Chinese pianist of his generation (he is 36 years old), Zhang Haochen, who opens the festivities. Those who have heard him perform Schubert and Liszt's Transcendental Études at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées know what they are in for. To play Beethoven – as his recent recording of the Hammerklavier Sonata demonstrates – he possesses everything he needs: titanic means, a transcendent sense of rhythm, ineffable colours, and long phrases – which have become so rare – that lead to the heart of the Beethovenian mystery. And this evening, he is performing no less than the last four sonatas – a feat rarely seen in concert. An event.
