Briefly

2027 marks the 200th anniversary of Beethoven's death. To open this year of commemoration, it is the great Chinese pianist of his generation (he is 36), Zhang Haochen, who gets things under way. Those who heard him in Schubert and Liszt's Transcendental Études at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées know exactly what they are dealing with. To play Beethoven – his recent recording of the Hammerklavier Sonata bears witness to this – he has everything he needs: titanic resources, a transcendent sense of rhythm, ineffable colours, long phrasing – so rare nowadays – that leads straight to the heart of the Beethovenian mystery. And tonight he gives nothing less than the last four sonatas, a feat rarely seen in concert. An event.
