Nearly seventy years after its founding by Neville Marriner, The Academy of St Martin in the Fields remains one of the most celebrated chamber ensembles in England. Originally made up of strings alone, the ensemble stays true to that spirit tonight with this programme.
The evening opens with Puccini's String Quartet I Crisantemi, a single-movement work in the form of a haunting musical lament. It is followed by Paganini's Violin Concerto No. 4, dating from 1830, which, after a sensational and dramatic series of misadventures affecting its autograph manuscript, was brought back to life by the Frenchman Arthur Grumiaux in 1954. To close the evening, we travel to Italy, which Tchaikovsky first discovered in 1878 and to which he would return twelve years later. It was in the Tuscan city of Florence that he composed a large part of The Queen of Spades, and this sextet, known as 'Souvenir de Florence', bathed in southern light yet demanding an extraordinary level of exigency from each of its six instrumentalists.
