Overview

From the concrete of the urban grands ensembles to the layers of history, Bâtir is a scenic investigation that questions the traces – visible and invisible – of our colonial heritage in the ways we inhabit and think about the city.

Following on from Koulounisation, presented at the TPM in 2023, Salim Djaferi continues a body of work that blends documentary theatre, performance and collective memory. With his new show, he sets out to bring to light the invisible traces of colonial heritage in housing policy.

His starting point: the large housing estates of Seine-Saint-Denis, where he grew up, resemble the housing estates built in French Algeria in the 1950s.

Seeking to understand what these architectural similarities rest on, he investigates through relatives, residents and researchers, weaving together intimate accounts, testimonies and archive documents to reveal what shapes our cities and the ways we inhabit them.
